The lighthouse at the pier head was completed in 1903. Its distinctive stripes are of naturally coloured red and white Aberdeen Granite. When built it was said to be Britain's most powerful port lighthouse.

A two span cable-stayed bridge with an A-frame pylon rising to 105m (344ft) crossing the River Wear between Castletown on the north to Pallion on the south bank. The Northern Spire Bridge opened on 29 August 2018.

Penshaw Monument, is a monument in the style of a Doric temple on Penshaw Hill located in the City of Sunderland, North East England.
